The Olympic Peninsula: Day Two

The second day of our trip we hiked to Merrymere Falls. It was an easy hike for the kids to do and ended at a beautiful waterfall. The kids had fun on the journey-- climbing up trees and over logs.

The trees were beautiful. It was like being in a different world.
The kids dubbed anything that looked like a throne that they could sit on along the way a "King Chair." This tree was one of them as it had a notch high up in the trunk (on the other side) that they could sit in and look down from.

There was a little stream along the way. Oops, wet shoes.
And bridges to cross. The bridge was really neat. The base of it was made from a fallen tree trunk.

We made it to the waterfall and enjoyed the view from behind the rails. There was a very steep drop on the other side. You can see in this picture Drew is looking at a small opening between the rails and the edge of the mountain that he could squeeze through...

He makes a run for it, and Mom has to react quickly! You can't see him, but that is me grabbing him as he makes it around the rails.
Here is my look that Glenn captured afterward; and the opening behind me that looks so inviting to a three year old who has no fear.
After the hike we went over to Lake Crescent and enjoyed a few hours playing in the water. It was gorgeous. You can see how clear the water is. The lake was nestled down in the canyon with high mountains all around. (There are more pictures of it in the web album)
Ian learned how to skip rocks on this trip and I think he practiced on about a million rocks.

Hurricane Ridge was our last stop for the day. It is a 17 mile drive up a windy National Forest road. The view while driving up is amazing, but once you reach the top there is no way to really describe it without experiencing it. On one side you see HUGE snow capped mountains, including Mount Olympus, and on the other side you can see all the way across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Canada. WOW!

This deer walked right out of a grove of trees, right next to us.

After exploring the ridge we headed back down the mountain. We went out to dinner at Bella Italia (see day one). Then went back to the hotel to watch another wall sized movie.
